What is Academic Average?
Academic Average is the numeric
average of all academic classes taken since the 9th grade. This
includes English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Foreign Language.
(See Academic Calculations)
What is Academic Average used for?
Academic Average is used for
determining Valedictorian, Salutatorian and scholarship nominees.
In addition, students must have an academic average of 90+ in order to
maintain membership in the National Honor Society (grades 10-12) or
National Junior Honor Society (grades 7-9).
What are AP Classes?
Advanced Placement courses are
available starting in the 11th grade. These are college level courses
taught at a faster pace and require additional work. At the end of the
schoolyear, students in AP courses will take an AP exam for that
specific subject and have the opportunity to earn college credit. More
information on AP courses can be found on the Academic
Calculations link.
When should I take the ACT or SAT?
The ACT/SAT is typically taken
during the Spring semester of the junior year. However, some students
opt to take these tests as early as their 10th grade year. Students at
LSA will be administered standardized tests throughout their high
school career that are predictor tests for the ACT and SAT. (Grade 9 =
EXPLORE test; Grade 10 = PLAN and PSAT test; Grade 11 = PSAT)
Therefore, it is encouraged that students utilize the reporting of
these tests (and the free ACT/SAT practice tests in the
counselor's office) before registering for the ACT/SAT.
Should I take the Optional Written Portion?
Yes, at least once. Many colleges
and universities (including Auburn University) now require completion
of the Written Portion of these tests. In addition, some schools may
use these scores as a benchmark for Freshman English placement.
What is the Standard Order of Operations for Applying to College?
Step 1 - Complete application and
application fee for specific postsecondary institution (usually done
online).
Step 2 - Request Transcript (and
possibly recommendation form) from counselor's office.
Step 3 - Send ACT/SAT scores.
Step 4 - Complete any scholarship applications specific to that school.
Step 5 - Complete the FAFSA
(www.fafsa.ed.gov) after January 1st of your senior year in high school.
How do I request a transcript?
Complete a transcript request form
(available from
this website under Transcript Information).
If no longer an LSA students, include $2 for processing.
How do I send my ACT scores?
If you did not request your scores to be automatically
sent to certain schools when you registered for the ACT/SAT, you will
need to log-in to your account and request that ACT/SAT sends your
scores. This involves a small fee, whereas requesting scores sent
during intial ACT/SAT registration does not. Mrs. Matthews cannot send offical test
scores to colleges/universities.
