Nurse Notes

Nurse Notes

The school nurse monitors for symptoms of contagious illness.  If symptoms exist, your child should not attend school.  If symptoms occur during school, parents will be contacted to pick up their child.

  • Fever – A student with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher should remain at home until fever free for 24 hours without medication.
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea – Students should remain at home until resolved.
  • Pink Eye – Students should remain at home for 24 hours after the first dose of medication.
  • Strep Throat – A student should not attend school until 24 hours after the first dose of antibiotics and fever free, without medication.
  • Hand, Foot & Mouth – Students should remain home until fever free for 24 hours without medication. In addition, students with new active blisters should stay home. Students can return to school when all sores are crusted over.
  • A student should remain home if a cough is consistent and uncontrolled.

Protocol for Lice

  • If school staff suspect a student has lice, the student will be screened by the school nurse or trained staff member in a private setting.
  • Students who are found to have live lice or viable nits will be referred to their parents for treatment.
  • Information on treatment will be provided to parents. Parents will be advised to provide treatment before the student returns to school.  Students may return to school after they have been treated.
  • Parents should be advised that a second treatment 7-10 days after the first treatment may be necessary. Parents are encouraged to carefully inspect daily (for about 10 days) after treatment.
  •  Students who have been found with lice may be rechecked in 7-10 days after treatment at the discretion of the school nurse or trained designee.
  •  Any close contacts to the person with lice may be inspected at the school nurse’s discretion or other trained staff member. If an infestation is found, they will be referred for treatment. School wide, classroom or other large group screenings are not recommended.
  • If there are cluster cases of three or more students in one classroom or a defined setting, notification letters to parents of students in that classroom may be sent home at the discretion of the school nurse or at the request of the school principal.
